PURPOSE

For the past 25 years, I’ve worked within institutions of higher education in varied roles creating opportunities for students to develop and pursue their interests. Currently, I am a Professor of Education and Department Chair: Secondary and Higher Education at Salem State University. Across my career at the core of every endeavor has been a deep interest in teaching and learning in ways that can be a catalyst for exploration and transformation for individuals and communities. Contemplative Pedagogy is an approach to teaching and learning that invites students to explore the ways in which the subjects they are studying intersect with and manifest in their own lives. Developing the capacity to be introspective and engage in deep reflection allows students to get the most out of their educational experiences and teachers to gain more fulfillment in their vocation. My work centers on working with educators to introduce contemplative approaches to teaching and learning that enhance our ability to engage across issues of race, class, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human difference.

A mentor of mine shared that the primary goal of a website is to allow others to figure out what you’re all about without them having to ask you. As such, this website will serve as a repository for my work and the ways it reflects a contemplative lens whether it be narrative writing, presentations, podcasts, or photography. I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with similarly interested scholars and I am available as a consultant for workshops and public speaking engagements.
